On March 8th and 9th, our lab took a fun trip to Komaruyama Ski Resort!
We spent two days enjoying skiing, snowboarding, and playing in the snow. Some of us were trying skiing for the first time (and falling a lot 😆), while others showed off their cool moves on the slopes.

After a full day outdoors, we warmed up with good food and relaxed conversations. It was a great chance to take a break from research and hang out together.
Thanks to everyone who joined—we had a blast!

Our PhD student, Maolin Dai, recently visited the University of Southampton for collaborative research and laboratory visits.

During his stay, he engaged in in-depth discussions with researchers at University of Southampton on joint research topics and had the opportunity to visit Professor Lin Xu and Professor Jayanta Sahu’s laboratory. This visit laid the foundation for future academic collaboration and contributed to the advancement of related research.

We were honored to host Dr. Gayathri Bharathan, who delivered an excellent presentation on Mid-IR photonics. Her insights and expertise sparked engaging discussions and provided valuable knowledge to our lab members.

Following her talk, we held a welcome party to celebrate Dr. Bharathan joining our lab. We extend our warmest wishes and hope she has a productive and enjoyable time with us in the coming months.

At the same time, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Dr. Guanyu Ye and Dr. Bowen Liu. As they embark on their next endeavors, we sincerely wish them continued success in their careers and personal growth.

Thank you, Dr. Ye and Dr. Liu, for your contributions to the lab, and welcome, Dr. Bharathan—we look forward to great collaborations ahead!

Prof. Set attened Photonics West 2025 and presented our recent works on compact fiber lasers.

Our review paper “Advances and Challenges of Mode-Locked Fiber Lasers” is published on the special issue of “Past, present, and future of optical fibres and fibre amplifiers: In celebration of the 80th
birthday of Sir David Payne”.

On 12/21, members of Yamashita-Set lab got together, and had an amazing year-end party!

OPJ2024 is organized by the Optical Society of Japan (OSJ) and held from November 29 to December 1, 2024, at the University of Electro-Communications in Chofu, Tokyo.
Prof. Yamashita and Prof. Set participated in OPJ2024, communicated with professors and researchers worldwide.

Our doctoral student, Takaki Kiyozumi, won the best poster award in Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) 2024A Meeting. Congratulations to him!
This award recognizes his innovative contributions in distributed fiber sensing using brillouin scattering.

The Workshop on Next-Geneartion Fiber Laser Technology was sucessfully held at Nagoya University. Maolin Dai and Yifan Ma participated in the workshop and gave oral presentations on their respective research achievements. In addition, Prof. Yamashita attended the meeting as a committee member.

In this september, we have three graduates: Bowen Liu (PhD), Guanyu Ye (PhD), and Rhona Hamilton (Master). Congratulations on you all! We will miss the time we spent, and best wishes for your bright future carrer.
