Maolin Dai, a Ph.D. student in the Yamashita–Set Laboratory, has been awarded the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad.

Prof. Yamashita, Prof. Set and Mr. Dai attended the award ceremony held at the Embassy of China in Japan. Prof. Yamashita delivered a speech as the representative supervisor.

We sincerely congratulate Maolin on this achievement and thank Prof. Yamashita and Prof. Set for the guidance and supervision.

We held an alumni gathering on December 7, 2025, with many graduates joining the event. During the gathering, we celebrated Prof. Yamashita’s 60th birthday and enjoyed a warm and memorable time together.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s participation and would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to Prof. Yamashita for his continued guidance and contributions to the laboratory.

We warmly welcome Prof. Zhenzhou Cheng to visit our RCAST laboratory.

Prof. Cheng is the Chairman and Professor of the Department of Optoelectronic Information Engineering at Tianjin University, working on mid-infrared photonic chips for environment and biochemical sensing.

Maolin Dai sucessfully defended his doctoral thesis and graduated in this September. After graduation, he will join the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo, as a JSPS research fellow, and will be a collaborative researcher with our lab.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Lee San-liang from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology to our laboratory. During his visit, Professor Lee delivered an engaging and insightful talk titled

“Realization of PICs for Optical Interconnect and Sensing Using Foundry Services”

In his presentation, Professor Lee discussed recent advances in the development of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for optical interconnect and sensing applications, with a particular focus on scalable fabrication enabled by commercial foundry services. The talk was followed by a lively discussion with lab members.

We sincerely thank Professor Lee for his visit and valuable interaction, and we look forward to future collaboration.

On March 8th and 9th, our lab took a fun trip to Komaruyama Ski Resort!
We spent two days enjoying skiing, snowboarding, and playing in the snow. Some of us were trying skiing for the first time (and falling a lot 😆), while others showed off their cool moves on the slopes.

After a full day outdoors, we warmed up with good food and relaxed conversations. It was a great chance to take a break from research and hang out together.

Our PhD student, Maolin Dai, recently visited the University of Southampton for collaborative research and laboratory visits.

During his stay, he engaged in in-depth discussions with researchers at University of Southampton on joint research topics and had the opportunity to visit Professor Lin Xu and Professor Jayanta Sahu’s laboratory. This visit laid the foundation for future academic collaboration and contributed to the advancement of related research.

We were honored to host Dr. Gayathri Bharathan, who delivered an excellent presentation on Mid-IR photonics. Her insights and expertise sparked engaging discussions and provided valuable knowledge to our lab members.

Following her talk, we held a welcome party to celebrate Dr. Bharathan joining our lab. We extend our warmest wishes and hope she has a productive and enjoyable time with us in the coming months.

At the same time, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Dr. Guanyu Ye and Dr. Bowen Liu. As they embark on their next endeavors, we sincerely wish them continued success in their careers and personal growth.
